In his latest review of the holdings in his Fidelity Investor model portfolio, fund expert Jim Lowell highlights a diverse trio of global favorites.
Global High Income (US:FGHNX)
Fund manager John Carlson and I go way back to when he taught me my first emerging market investment lesson: if you don want to own the debt, you won want to own the stocks. That lesson can be applied globally.
And today, while I not sanguine about emerging marketsnear term prospects, I remain "Carlson Confident." He leads a group of managers that invest in stocks, bonds, and convertible securities from around the globe; here, the emphasis is on kinds of debt needed to finance growth.
The current tilt toward the established marketplace of the US, and the scant tidbit in emerging China, reflects his sense of where to find reward and avoid risks.
It began trading in May 2011 and has a market value of approximately $330 million. The top five country representations are the US (56.6%), Netherlands (4.8%), China (3.4%), UK (3.1%), and Italy (2.9%).

I do believe as Wal-Mart gets hurt, the dollar stores will do a little better especially Dollar General (DG), but don overlook Dollar Tree (DLTR). Wall Street is worried about Costco (COST) but I believe it will actually outperform expectations. Costco seems to have figured out how to grow much faster than Wal-Mart and still provide affordable health insurance for most employees.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Travis Hoium]
Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) stock is taking the commodities hit the hardest today, falling 1.8%. If commodities continue their decline, the company will see lower demand for earth moving equipment. It was also announced on Thursday that negotiations between Caterpillar and the Milwaukee workers' union have been suspended. Last week, workers rejected a proposal that would have frozen wages for existing workers and created a lower pay scale for new workers. In the meantime, they continue to report for work under the old contract terms, so there's no pending disruption to manufacturing.

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) continues to struggle in its sales of heavy equipment. We have now seen the release of its fourth-quarter sales trends, and the trend is not Caterpillar’s friend. About the only good news is that the rate of decline in most instances was a lower one.

Another Dow stock that likely fell on the news from China was Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) , which ended the day down 0.1%. Although today's announcement clearly didn't have a major affect on either caterpillar or Alcoa, it did add fuel to the bearish sentiment investors have had with each company this year. Caterpillar is down 7.24% year to date, while Alcoa has lost 8.06%. These may not seem like massive declines, but when we add in the fact that the Dow itself is up 12.94% in 2013, the idea that Alcoa and Caterpillar have been beaten by nearly 20% over just the past six months is rather shocking.

Today's Dow leader
Today's Dow leader is Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) , up 1.2%. This month the company has taken some heat from short-sellers who panned the company because they believe it will suffer from a slowdown in demand in China. Lending credence to that view was Caterpillar's poor earnings report last week, which showed a 43% drop in income. The stock sold off slightly, finishing down 4% for the week -- the worst performance of any Dow component. In what appears to be an effort to appease shareholders, today Caterpillar announced a $1 billion accelerated share-buyback at market prices. The question investors need to ask themselves is whether Caterpillar is buying at an opportune time or simply trying to appease shareholders in the short run. One Fool contributor believes you shouldn't give up on Caterpillar stock just yet.
