Best Tech Stocks To Own For 2014

Our latest featured stock is thriving where two major trends in modern China meet. The first is the rapid adoption of mobile technology; the second is online retailing, explains Paul Goodwin, editor of Cabot China & Emerging Markets Report.

As more smartphones are sold, everything is happening online. And that includes shopping. Increasingly prosperous Chinese love to shop, and being online brings the entire retail world to their phones.

Vipshop Holdings (VIPS) offers fashionable merchandise, including clothing, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, and more, all at discounted prices.

But what really makes Vipshop special is that sales are all discounted, online, flash sales. That means limited amounts of each product are offered for limited amounts of time, and at a significant discount to full retail, usually 50% to 70% below original retail.

Clothing is the biggest sales category (over 40% of total sales) with shoes and bags accounting for over 10%. But the flash sales model can include a huge variety of goods, so close to half of sales come from miscellaneous goods.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

Ellie Mae (NYSE: ELLI  ) reported earnings on April 30. Here are the numbers you need to know.

    The 10-second takeaway
For the quarter ended March 31 (Q1), Ellie Mae beat slightly on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Ellie Mae (ELLI), an electronic mortgage origination network in the U.S, closed up 16% at $28 in Friday's trading session.

    Friday's Volume: 2.17 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 468,756

    Volume % Change: 372%

Shares of ELLI skyrocketed higher on Friday after the company reported a profit and met Wall Street's expectations and beat the revenue expectation.

From a technical perspective, ELLI soared higher here right above both its 50-day moving average of $23.64 and its 200-day moving average of $23.71 with heavy upside volume. This move sent shares of ELLI into breakout territory, since the stock took out some key overhead resistance levels at $25.39 to $25.75 and then above more resistance at $26.34. This move also pushed shares of ELLI into new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Shares of ELLI are now starting to move within range of triggering another major breakout trade. That trade will hit if ELLI manages to take out Friday's high of $28.100 and then once it clears its three-year high at $30.59 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ELLI as long as it's trending above those breakout levels of $26.34 to $25.75 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 468,756 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ELLI will set up to enter new 52-week- and three-year-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $35 to $40.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Cloud software provider ChannelAdvisor (ECOM) has enjoyed a stellar run since its IPO earlier this year. In the months since ECOM started trading at the beginning of the summer, shares have nearly doubled. But this stock could be headed for even higher ground before the calendar flips over to 2014.

That's because ECOM is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish price setup that's formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $40 and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as ECOM bounces in between those two technically significant price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above resistance. When that happens, we've got a buy signal in shares.

ChannelAdvisor has shown investors excellent relative strength all the way up this year, but it's worth noting that the uptrend in ECOM's relative strength line has remained intact even while the ascending triangle has been forming – that's a big sign of strength in this market. I'd recommend buying on a move through $40, from there, keep a protective stop at the 200-day moving average.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Congratulations to anyone who owned shares of Bridgeline Digital Inc. (NASDAQ:BLIN) before today. You're now up 35% for the day so far, and still counting. The big pop from BLIN stemmed from the announcement that it scored a pretty significant deal with an organization consisting of nearly 4000 dentists and doctors. The terms of the deal are simple enough... Bridgeline Digital will host and service websites for the practitioners in the group for a period of three years, and in return, BLIN will receive $7 million.
