According to new data from the International Air Transport Association, or IATA, via CNN, the world's airlines average just $5.42 in profit per ticket, for a net profit margin of only 2.4%.
Think that sounds bad? You don't know the half of it. Cut-rate retailer Wal-Mart still earns 3.3% on the bottom line -- nearly a percentage point better than the average airline. No wonder some carriers are struggling.
What to do, especially now that overall capacity is shrinking the wake of big mergers? Fill more seats on every flight. As an investor, you can track this via a widely reported metric known as "load factor."
Busier skies mean more potential profit
To be fair, there's no perfect correlation between high load factor and high profits. Even a carrier that packs its aircraft sardine-tight could still fall victim to unexpected fuel, maintenance, or labor expenses. Or weather delays could cancel flights and cut overall capacity, crimping profits. Airlines suffer from unknowns like no other industry.

UnitedHealth (NYSE: UNH ) also fell, losing 0.9% on the same day that rival Aetna (NYSE: AET ) reported earnings. Aetna managed to increase its earnings by keeping premium prices high and cutting its costs, and it's positioning itself to deal with the onset of health exchanges and other key provisions of Obamacare that will take effect within the next year. But what's increasingly clear is that competition among health insurance carriers will become fierce as Obamacare is increasingly implemented, and UnitedHealth needs to defend its leadership position by getting its plans onto as many health exchanges as possible without cutting profit margins any further than the new health-care law will require.

Moving mountains?
There isn't much for investors to get excited about with this development at first glance. Sure, several publicly traded companies should like the news. For example, UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH ) and Aetna (NYSE: AET ) sell insurance in Arkansas. These insurers could potentially pick up additional business.

In the video below, Motley Fool analyst Jason Moser discusses why Home Depot (NYSE: HD ) will benefit from a growing trend of home renovation. Historically, Home Depot and Lowe's (NYSE: LOW ) have traded places for industry dominance, but over the past few years Home Depot has held on to the top spot. But with shares of Home Depot near an all-time high, is the stock too pricey for investors? Moser shares why he believes Home Depot is still a good value.

J.M. Smucker (SJM) dropped 6.5% to $101.49 today, making it the biggest loser in the S&P 500, with Lowe’s (LOW) close behind, down 6.2% at $47.33. Other big losers include Newmont Mining (NEM), which fell 3.5% to $26.39, eBay (EBAY), which has dropped 3.3% to $50.39, and Iron Mountain (IRM), which declined 3.3% to $28.71.

Home-improvement retailer Lowe's (NYSE: LOW ) wasn't as lucky as its shares fell 6.2% on a weaker-than-expected outlook. Overall, it was a strong report for the Home Depot rival as same-store sales grew 6.2%, and earnings per share jumped 34.3% to $0.47, but that missed the Street's expectations of $0.48. Lowe's also raised its full-year EPS guidance to $2.15 from $2.10, but that was below the analyst mark at $2.19. The housing sector has boomed this year, lifting retailers and homebuilders alike, and Lowe's shares are still up 30% year to date. Today's drop seems to be more of a valuation-based correction rather than a long-term sign.

So what: Unfortunately for Turquoise, and parent company Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO ) , the Mongolian parliament is currently in summer recess and the approval process will take plenty of time even after that, so all work on the underground development will be put on hold indefinitely. Given that Oyu Tolgoi is Turquoise's primary operation -- total capital invested in the mine to March 31 was about $6 billion -- the delay represents a huge setback for management and raises plenty of uncertainty for shareholders.

The warehouses have been getting heat for more than two years for long delays in shipping aluminum to buyers. The Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) filed a complaint with the LME in 2011 alleging that Metro brought aluminum into its warehouses and then refused to let the stuff leave, which caused delays in delivery, higher storage charges and higher prices for aluminum. Coke claimed that Goldman/Metro paid cash incentives to producers like Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA) and Rio Tinto PLC (NYSE: RIO) to store aluminum in Metro’s warehouses during the 2008 and 2009 recession.

Big mining firms wrote down more than $50 billion in assets in 2012, led by Rio Tinto PLC (NYSE: RIO), which wrote down $14 billion and fired its CEO. Mergers and acquisitions in the mining business totaled more than $1 trillion in the past decade, and the 5% write-down is really not so bad, all things considered.
