Hot Performing Companies To Watch For 2014

Exchange-traded funds offer a convenient way to invest in sectors or niches that interest you. If you'd like to add some international dividend-paying stocks to your portfolio but don't have the time or expertise to hand-pick a few, the iShares Dow Jones International Select Div ETF (NYSEMKT: IDV  ) could save you a lot of trouble. Instead of trying to figure out which companies will perform best, you can use this ETF to invest in lots of them simultaneously.

The basics
ETFs often sport lower expense ratios than their mutual fund cousins. The iShares ETF's expense ratio -- its annual fee -- is a relatively low 0.50% -- and it recently yielded more than 5%!

This ETF has performed well, outstripping the MSCI EAFE index over the past three and five years. As with most investments, of course, we can't expect outstanding performances in every quarter or year. Investors with conviction need to wait for their holdings to deliver.

Why international companies?
It's a smart idea to diversify your holdings not only by market size and industry but also geographically. If the U.S. economy stalls or slides, other economies may still be performing well and could help offset losses in your portfolio. Dividend-paying companies offer an extra bonus, as dividends can be quite powerful. Internationally reaped ones can be a little more complicated than domestic ones, though.

It's tragic that it took a tragedy like last year's shooting at a Newton, Connecticut elementary school to get the ball rolling. Nevertheless, that ball is rolling now, and it's putting companies like L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:LLL), View Systems Inc. (OTCBB:VSYM), and American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI) in the spotlight. How so? Because VSYM, ASEI, and LLL make the tools that are, unfortunately, going to be the only way to absolutely ensure this nation's public schools are secure, and defended from gunmen like Newton's Adam Lanza.

Last Friday shooting incident at LAX highlighted the need to keep airports and other public places securesomething that small cap airport security stocks likeAmerican Science & Engineering, Inc (NASDAQ: ASEI), Analogic Corporation (NASDAQ: ALOG), OSI Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: OSIS) and View Systems Inc (OTCBB: VSYM) do already. In the LAX shooting incident, its still not clear what the shooter motive was beyond signs that he wassuffering from somekind of mental illness or breakdown. In other words, preventing such attacks in the future (beyond identifying those with mental illness on the verge of snapping) will continue to be difficult as the incident also happened outside of the airport security zone.

10 Best Gas Stocks To Buy For 2014

Debating the exportation of natural gas in a liquified form has been a popular theme of many discussions focused on U.S. energy policy. However, when you look at the current scenario, we're already exporting more natural gas volumes than we're expected to approve for LNG. Both Canada and Mexico have been sizable purchasers of natural gas through existing pipelines like those of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP  ) .

Based on the current estimate range, only 6.5 billion to 8.5 billion cubic feet per day will probably be absorbed by the global market. We've already approved nearly half of that total, between Cheniere Energy's (NYSEMKT: LNG  ) Sabine Pass facility and the newly approved FreeportLNG operation. Twenty applications remain, with Dominion Resources next up on the docket.

One home-run investing opportunity has been slipping under Wall Street's radar for months. But it won't stay hidden much longer. Forward-thinking energy players such as General Electric and Ford have already plowed sizable amounts of research capital into this little-known stock, because they know it holds the key to the explosive profit power of the coming "no choice fuel revolution." Luckily, there's still time for you to get on board if you act quickly. All the details are inside an exclusive report from The Motley Fool. Click here for the full story.

Advisors' Opinion:

    Winners
Given the current state of U.S. energy production, most midstream companies are winners these days. Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP  ) got things started off on the right foot, reporting in mid-April and beating expectations on revenue and EPS. Here are some highlights from around the industry:

Buckeye Partners (NYSE: BPL  ) trounced analyst expectations on the top and bottom lines, and recorded a distribution coverage ratio of 1.21 times payouts, allowing the partnership to boost its distribution. DCP Midstream Partners' (NYSE: DCP  ) distributable cash flow popped 40% year over year, and the partnership completed its Eagle Ford dropdown transaction with parent company DCP Midstream, boosting its stake in the lucrative South Texas shale play. Boardwalk Energy Partners' (NYSE: BWP  ) operating revenue and net income increased 5% and 10% year over year. More importantly, distributable cash flow popped 24%, though the partnership elected to hold the distribution flat quarter over quarter. Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE: ETP  ) had no distribution increase either, but things are looking better than they have in a while. Production in the Eagle Ford Shale is driving growth at ETP, and the partnership is reorganizing into an operation that is stronger and more diverse than ever before.

Very strong results here, now let's take a look at some midstream companies that didn't perform as well.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt DiLallo]

None of this is to say that these short-sellers don't have any valid arguments, but there does appear to be some gamesmanship going on. Knowing full well that at some point the SEC has to look into these accusations, it's bound to drop the stock price when investors run for the hills once an inquiry is disclosed. Investors in both LINN Energy and its affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) are unfortunately learning that lesson this week.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

Affiliated companies LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) and LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) are continuing to return money to their share- and unitholders. Both companies have declared dividends for their respective Q1s, and they match -- each will pay $0.725 per share or unit.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

    LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  )
In my opinion, LINN offers investors the best the characteristics of both Conoco and Enterprise. Like Conoco it'sbenefitingfrom the tremendous growth in onshore U.S. oil and gas production. Yet like Enterprise it's structured in a more tax-efficient manner, as it's structured in a way similar to an MLP. Taken together, LINN or its affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) make my list as one of the best long-term energy stocks for you to invest in if you're seeking a high yield.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Robert Rapier]

The second, and riskier, option is to buy MLPs engaged in natural gas production. While these tend to have some portion of their output hedged against sharp price fluctuations, they retain much more exposure to the ups and downs of natural gas prices than the midstream partnerships, which function as toll collectors.EV Energy Partners(NASDAQ: EVEP),Atlas Resource Partners(NYSE: ARP),BreitBurn Energy Partners(NASDAQ: BBEP) andMemorial Production Partners(NASDAQ: MEMP) are some of the upstream (oil and gas production) partnerships in the US shale plays.

The big problem is that there aren't a lot of buyers, which is the issue thatEV Energy Partners (NASDAQ: EVEP  ) has run into with its own Utica sale. With major players like Chesapeake and Devon exiting, and foreign buyers like Sinopec already securing a foothold in the play, there are few buyers left that are willing to risk capital on a play that's no longer viewed as a sure thing. This has left EV Energy stuck with the 100,000 net acres it has been marketing since last year. The company has chosen to change its marketing strategy to sell the acreage in smaller packages to appeal to more buyers.

These assets consist of approximately 1,445 miles of pipeline ranging in diameter from 2 inches to 20 inches with an estimated design capacity of 590 million cubic feet per day. Its South Texas region also includes 29 compressors with total compression of approximately 35,000 horsepower, two processing plants with total processing capacity of 185 million cubic feet per day and contracted third-party processing capacity of 83 million cubic feet per day, two treatin! g plants and one fractionator. During 2011, the systems in this region had an average throughput of 379 million cubic feet per day, including the processing plants, which processed an average of 75 million cubic feet per day in that period. It divides its South Texas region into four asset systems Vanderbilt and Gulf Coast gathering systems, which it refers to collectively as the Gulf Coast system; CCNG Transmission, which refer to as the CCNG system; Gregory gathering system, Gregory processing plant and Gregory fractionation plant, and Conroe gathering system and Conroe processing plant.

The pipelines in its South Texas segment are connected to multiple producing fields, including the Eagle Ford shale area. In addition to tie-ins to its two processing plants, its gathering systems are also connected to two processing plants owned by third parties and to a range of intrastate and interstate pipelines.

The Gulf Coast system is located throughout 13 counties in South Texas, including parts of the Eagle Ford shale area, and consists of two pipeline systems. The Gulf Coast system includes approximately 743 miles of pipeline ranging from 2 inches to 20 inches in diameter with an estimated design capacity of 205 million cubic feet per day. The gas is delivered to third-party processing plants, including the Formosa processing plant located in Point Comfort, Texas and the Hilcorp processing plant located in Old Ocean, Texas. In the case of the Hilcorp processing plant, its customers pay it gathering fees to transport approximately 25 million cubic feet per day from their wells to this processing plant. Its producer ! customers! on the Gulf Coast system range from small independent exploration and production companies to producers, such as Chesapeake Energy and Devon Energy.

The CCNG system is located in the Eagle Ford shale area and consists of over 417 miles of transmission and gathering pipeline ranging from 2 inches to 20 inches in diameter. Gas in the system is purchased and sold, under fixed-spread arrangements, as well as transported on behalf of shippers. The CCNG system sells its dry natural gas in the industrial market around the city of Corpus Christi. A portion of the throughput on its CCNG system is processed at its Gregory processing plant or at the Formosa processing plant located in Point Comfort, Texas.

The Gregory gathering system is located near Corpus Christi, Texas and consists of approximately 266 miles of pipeline ranging from 4 inches to 18 inches in diameter. The system also includes one compressor. Its Gregory processing plant is a cryogenic natural gas plant comprised of two units collectively having a total capacity of 135 million cubic feet per day. Advisors' Opinion:

Two-thirds of the reserves are located in the midcontinent, which are well-known for holding great MLP-type assets that have long life and low decline. Peers like LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) and Vanguard Natural Resources (NASDAQ: VNR  ) each has a substantial presence in the midcontinent region. Eagle Rock's reserves there have a heavy natural gas component; gas is 64% of these reserves. However, Eagle Rock has an exciting oil play in the region, which I'll get to in a moment.

Hot Canadian Stocks For 2014

Canadian firm Amaya is buying the company that operates PokerStars. LONDON (CNNMoney) A Canadian gambling-services company is going 'all in,' paying $4.9 billion to buy the firm behind the popular PokerStars gambling website.

Amaya (AMYGF), which is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange, is buying Oldford Group, which runs PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, another gambling site.

"The transaction will result in Amaya becoming the world's largest publicly-traded online gaming company," said the companies in a joint press release. The statement also said they plan to expand in the U.S. market.

PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker are the world's most popular online poker brands, with more than 85 million registered players.

However, the games have had their fair share of problems. In July 2012, the U.S. Justice Department announced a $731 million settlement with PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker to resolve allegations related to the company circumventing federal laws against Internet gambling.

What does a gold miner have to do to go up these days? Sure, it’s understandable that Yamana Gold (AUY) would be falling today thanks to a Raymond James downgrade, but Newmont Mining (NEM)?

  • [By Rich Smith]

Bugs of a feather flock together
Arizona's proposed law was flawed from the get-go, because it fatally misunderstood the philosophy behind precious-metal investors. Stock investors sometimes buy gold stocks such as Yamana Gold (NYSE: AUY  ) or Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) in hopes they will rise in value, so they can cash out at a profit. (Although with Yamana shares down 13% so far this year, and Goldcorp down 21%, there have been precious few profits to cash out lately.) They're equally willing to trade one gold-mining stock with a high P/E (Goldcorp costs 16.5 times earnings for example, and Yamana more than 20) for a gold miner that looks cheaper than the competition -- for example, Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM  ) , which costs only 10 times earnings.

Relatively weak demand for thermal coal in China has pushed coal prices lower in Australia. That's a problem for big miners like Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO  ) , BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP  ) , and Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) . However it could add to the allure of uranium miner Cameco (NYSE: CCJ  ) .

  • [By Brian Pacampara]

Based on the aggregated intelligence of 180,000-plus investors participating in Motley Fool CAPS, the Fool's free investing community, uranium producer Cameco (NYSE: CCJ  ) has earned a respected four-star ranking.

  • [By Joshua Bondy]

Cameco (NYSE: CCJ  ) is the world's preeminent pure-play uranium miner. It has a host of high-quality mines and a small total debt-to-equity ratio of 0.25. Its margins are low as the industry is still recovering from Fukushima, but this has allowed Cameco to buy up assets from potentially dangerous competitors. The good news is that its gross margin of 35.2% lets it sit back and watch the market recover.

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Among holdings in which GMT Capital increased its stake was Canada-based uranium specialist Cameco (NYSE: CCJ  ) . The company's business is expected to improve as gas and coal prices eventually rise, and also due to new nuclear plants being built. My colleague Sean Williams likes Cameco's transparency, expects higher uranium prices, and notes that China is also expected to demand more uranium over time. Some see the stock having a fair chance to appreciate substantially.

China is set to ease the one child policy, something that could benefit Chinese stocks in general but be especially beneficial to insurance stocks like China Life Insurance Company Ltd (NYSE: LFC) and CNinsure Inc (NASDAQ: CISG) plus health care stocks like Mindray Medical International Ltd(NYSE: MR) and Concord Medical Services Hldg Ltd (NYSE: CCM). First, let be clear that China is NOT abolishing the one child policy as the changes will merelyallow married couples to have two children if one spouse is an only child plus it will be up to China 34 province-level administrations to revisetheir laws and put the new policy into effect. Moreover, China family-planning bureaucracy employs more than 500,000 full-time workers and six million part-time workers all the way down to the village level tocollect billions of dollars in fines and these bureaucrats have fought for years against policy changesmeaning they could throw up roadblocks if not placated. With that said, the insurance and health care sectors are two sectors with publicly Chinese stocks that look set totake advantage of the coming changes.

Noah (NOAH) is a service provider focusing on distributing wealth management products to the high-net-worth population in the People's Republic of China. This stock closed up 7.7% to $12.64 in Friday's trading session

    Friday's Volume: 357,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 207,430

    Volume % Change: 120%

From a technical perspective, NOAH ripped higher here right above its 50-day moving average of $11.37 with above-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of NOAH within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if NOAH manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $12.77 to $12.98 with high volume. At last check, NOAH hit an intraday high on Friday of $12.98 and volume was well above its three-month average action of 207,430 shares.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NOAH as long as it's trending above its 50! -day at $! 11.37 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 207,430 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then NOAH will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $14.64. Any high-volume move above $14.64 will then push NOAH into new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $18 to $20.

Could this be the real deal this time? There's no denying that InvenSense has pretty solid technology, particularly as Samsung -- which typically uses the best components it can find -- has so extensively used InvenSense's products. That said, the iPhone 5s used the following MEMS components:

Three-axis accelerometer from Bosch Sensortech Three-axis gyroscope from STMicroelectronics (STM) Three-axis electronic compass from AKM

For InvenSense to displace Bosch (which managed to wrestle away the accelerometer socket from STMicroelectronics) and/or STMicroelectronics over at Apple, it is going to have to present a pretty compelling value proposition. Whether it can do so only the tear-downs will t! ell, but it is surprising -- particularly given how compelling InvenSense's products seem to be -- that the company hasn't won an iPhone socket to date.

10 Best European Stocks For 2014

European stocks closed little changed at a 10-week high as a rally in mining companies offset slower-than-forecast economic growth in Japan.

Fresnillo Plc soared 6.6 percent to a two-month high as precious metals gained. Prudential Plc climbed to the highest in more than two decades after posting a 22 percent jump in profit. Telekom Austria AG dropped 1.6 percent after reporting second-quarter earnings that missed analystsprojections. Ladbrokes Plc (LAD) slid 2.6 percent as JPMorgan Chase & Co. downgraded the U.K. gambling company.

The Stoxx Europe 600 Index increased less than 0.1 percent to 306.08 at the close of trading, having earlier risen as much as 0.2 percent ad declined 0.6 percent. The benchmark gauge added 0.6 percent last week as better-than-forecast economic data in Europe and China outweighed concern that the Federal Reserve will reduce the pace of its bond-purchase program. The measure has rallied 9.4 percent this year.

apan has delivered some conflicting data recently, but market participants are in a positive mood and see the economy is not on a bad road, said Christian Zogg, who manages about $540 million as head of equity and fixed income at LLB Asset Management AG in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. tocks are still the better bet as opposed to bonds, which should lead some large institutional investors to rethink their investments, and that should continue to support shares in the mid-term.

Imperial trades cheaply and pays a great, sustainable and for-ever-growing 4.5% cash dividend yield. The company's 2014 10.4 times P/E multiple represents a 40% discount to what most European consumer staples sell for. Advisors' Opinion:

Investors shouldn't automatically conclude that the problem is specific to Riverbed, though. Networking peer F5 Networks (NASDAQ: FFIV  ) had to give unfavorable revenue guidance for the remainder of the year when it released its own earnings earlier this week. Moreover, Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR  ) sported falling sequential revenue, and guided the current quarter toward the low end of sales expectations. A tough spending environment has made it hard for any networking players to hold their own.

3 Future Biotechnology Blockbusters?

The holy grail of drug development is launching a billion-dollar blockbuster therapy, but that isn't easy to do. It costs more than $1 billion to usher compounds through expensive clinical trials (including failures) and just 10% of drugs in pipelines ever make it to market.

The hit-and-miss nature of the industry suggests that only the most sophisticated (and risk-taking) investors should buy biotechnology stocks, but for those who invest in the space there are few things as profit-friendly as catching a billion-dollar blockbuster in the making.

That leads me to Medivation (NASDAQ: MDVN  ) , Ophthotech (NASDAQ: OPHT  ) , and Portola (NASDAQ: PTLA  ) , three companies with important therapies that may very well be destined to become top sellers.

Expanding the label
Medivation has the distinction of being the only one of these three companies to have a drug on the market.

The fast-growing Xtandi (a joint product with Astellas) has been nibbling at Johnson & Johnson's heels since winning approval as a treatment for post-chemotherapy metastatic-castration resistant prostate cancer, or mCRPC, in 2012.

Xtandi has already unseated J&J's Zytiga as the market share leader in this small indication, but a much larger payday is coming if the FDA approves Xtandi for use in pre-chemotherapy mCRPC patients.

In December 2012, the FDA approved a similar label expansion for Zytiga, which quickly became a blockbuster. Zytiga's sales totaled $1.7 billion in 2013 and climbed another 45% to $1.07 billion in the first six months of this year.

Xtandi is already being prescribed to pre-chemo patients off-label, and phase 3 trials show that patients using the drug were able to delay chemotherapy by 11.2 months, versus just 2.8 months with the placebo.

The FDA is expected to rule on the label expansion on Sept. 18. If approved, Xtandi revenue will likely jump significantly from the $172 million it notched globally in the first quarter.

Source: Regeneron.

Playing well with others
Ophthotech isn't your typical biotechnology company. Instead of developing a drug that can replace existing therapies, it's working on a drug that can be used alongside them.

The company's Fovista successfully boosted eyesight in patients with wet age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, by 10.6 letters when used alongside Novartis' blockbuster drug Lucentis, versus 6.5 letters for Lucentis alone.

Lucentis racked up $619 million in sales during the second quarter for Novartis, which owns foreign rights to the drug, and more than $4 billion for Novartis and Roche (its U.S. partner on the drug) in 2013. And it's not the only drug Fovista may help work better.

Ophthotech is also studying Fovista alongside Regeneron and Bayer's fast-growing wet-AMD treatment Eylea. Since gaining FDA approval in 2011, Eylea has quickly won away market share from Lucentis, with total global sales clocking in at more than $500 million in the first quarter of this year.

Ophthotech's gamble to position Fovista as an adjunctive treatment rather than a stand-alone drug is already paying off. Last month, Novartis, eager to defend its Lucentis franchise, paid $200 million up front and agreed to pay as much as $1 billion in milestones, plus royalties, to lock up international rights to market Fovista if and when it passes muster with regulators.

Counting on a competitor
It's not often that big drugmakers root for competitors, but that's exactly what's happening with Portola.

Portola is working on a factor Xa decoy, a drug that has the very unique (and important) ability to reverse the anticoagulant effects of the latest factor Xa clot-busting drugs from Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Daichi.

Johnson & Johnson, which is partnered with Bayer on Xarelto, and Bristol, which is partnered with Pfizer on Eliquis, are already making big money selling their factor Xa alternatives to the side effect-laden warfarin, but sales could truly soar if an effective antidote wins approval.

Johnson's Xarelto sales rose 91% to $361 million in the second quarter, while sales of Bristol and Pfizer's Eliquis jumped from $22 million in the first quarter of 2013 to $106 million in the first quarter of 2014 (the companies have yet to report second-quarter numbers).

Those big-selling drugs will likely soon be joined by another factor Xa anticoagulant made by Daichi, and all those approvals aim to dislodge warfarin's decades-long stranglehold on the market.

That means Portola's reversal drug will be relied upon heavily in hospital settings, but Portola isn't stopping there. It is ushering its own factor Xa drug, betrixaban, through phase 3 trials, positioning it to compete directly against these collaborators.

Source: Portola.

Fool-worthy final thoughts
All three of these companies have significant potential but come with risk.

Xtandi has the potential for label expansion in prostate cancer and may have potential as a breast cancer treatment, but it's Medivation's only drug. Johnson & Johnson in 2013 acquired a potential second-generation version of Xtandi, ARN-509, that was developed in the same lab at UCLA and could someday displace it. Ophthotech and Portola similarly have uninspiring pipeline depth. The only other drug under development at Ophthotech is Zimura, another treatment for AMD. Beyond its factor Xa decoy and factor Xa anticoagulant, Portola's pipeline includes just two other early stage compounds. That said, for aggressive investors willing to take risk, all three companies may deliver significant sales over time that could prove profit-friendly.
