Advisors' Opinion:

Insurance companies have also been struggling against the pressures of low interest rates, with their all-important investin! g operations suffering from lower yields. Travelers Companies (NYSE: TRV  ) is in the red this morning, with a lesser drop of 0.21% as of this writing. Despite the pressure from low bond yields, the company announced impressive earnings in April. As one of the favorites of Street hedge funds, Travelers has been getting plenty of good press from analysts, with a reiterated "buy" rating from TheStreet, an "outperform" from Raymond James, and a boost to its target price. The increase to $97 gives current investors a 12.2% upside based on yesterday's close.

  • [By John Maxfield]

On the individual stock front, shares of Travelers Companies (NYSE: TRV  ) are leading the Dow higher this afternoon, up by 2.3% at the time of writing. Given that it's an insurance company, the fact that the jobs report wasn't outright awful probably has a lot to do with Travelers' ascent today. The better the economy is doing, the sooner long-term interest rates will increase. And the sooner long-term rates increase, the sooner Travelers' bottom line will pick up to full steam.

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

Travelers Companies Inc (TRV) was downgraded by analysts at Wells Fargo on Thursday, as they believe shares of the insurance provider will lose some steam going forward.

The analysts downgraded TRV from “Outperform” to “Market Perform” and see shares reaching a valuation range of $89-$92, down from the previous target range of $94-$98. This new price target range suggests a 6% to 10% upside to the stock’s Wednesday closing price of $83.73.

Furthermore, the analysts note that TRV is up 41% since they started recommending the stock in January 2012, versus a 32% gain for the S&P 500. “Travelers has been a leader in gaining commercial lines renewal rate increases utilizing a disciplined, segmented approach. Yet as TRV reaches rate adequacy across more of its segmentation bands, we think there is less profit leverag! e, which ! could slow multiple expansion going forward.”

Travelers shares were inactive during pre-market trading on Thursday. The stock is up 16.58% year-to-date.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Earnings news played a big role in the advance. Within the Dow, Travelers (NYSE: TRV  ) rose 2.6% after it moved to increase premiums on certain policies and suffered fewer major catastrophic events during the quarter. Although revenue declined, the company boosted its profit by 11% and raised its quarterly dividend to $0.50 per share -- a 9% jump from its previous rate. Even when hurricane season returns later this year, the insurance company will have established a strong foundation on which to weather future storms. DuPont also impressed investors, gaining 3% after reporting better-than-expected earnings and affirming its full-year earnings guidance, adding a 5% dividend hike to boot.

There hasnt been a January effect rally in shares of Ply Gem (PGEM). In fact, it has been quite the opposite. Shares are down a whopping 25% during the month. For a stock I rated as on of the Top 10 Sizzling Stocks, such a move is painful, but not disastrous. Sizzling Stocks are meant to be held for the duration of the year and we have 11 months to go. Small-cap stocks like Ply Gem can move sharply one direction or the other.

Hot Warren Buffett Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Hot Warren Buffett Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Aethlon Med ical Inc (AEMD)

Aethlon Medical, Inc. (Aethlon), incorporated on April 17, 1991, is a developmental-stage company. The Company is focused on creating medical devices that address unmet medical needs in cancer, infectious disease, and other life-threatening conditions.

The Company's Aethlon ADAPT (Adaptive Dialysis-Like Affinity Platform Technology) system is a revenue-stage technology platform that provides the basis for a new class of devices that provide rapid, selective removal of disease promoting particles from the entire circulatory system. The Aethlon ADAPT product pipeline includes the Aethlon Hemopurifier to address infectious disease and cancer, and a medical device being developed under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to reduce the incidence of sepsis in combat-injured soldiers.

The Aethlon Hemopurifier

The Company's Hemopurifier is a medical device that targets the rapid elimination of life-threatening infectious disease and cancer glycopathogens from circulation. Under the feasibility study protocol, the Company will enroll ten end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients who are infected with the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) to demonstrate the safety of Hemopurifier therapy. In addition to augmenting the early viral kinetic response to SOC, the Company's Hemopurifier provides a candidate solution for viral rebound patients who traditionally are forced to discontinue therapy at the point HCV establishes resistance to drug regimens. Additionally, the Company's Hemopurifier represents a therapeutic strategy to address the population of HCV-infected dialysis patients for which SOC and all-antiviral strategies may be contraindicated or not cleared.

In design, the Company's Hemopurifier consists of the affinity lectin Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) immobi! lized in the outer-capillary space of advanced plasma membrane technology. The design allows for extracorporeal therapeutic deli very to occur on standard CRRT and dialysis instruments alre! ady located in hospitals and clinics worldwide. The mechanism of the Hemopurifier to rapidly eliminate a broad-spectrum disease targets is based on GNA's ability to selectively bind high mannose signatures that are abundant on the surface of cancer-secreted exosomes and glycoproteins that reside on the outer membrane of infectious viral pathogens. The Company has also established a compassionate-use treatment program at the Medanta Medicity Institute in India that provides treatment access to HCV-infected individuals.

The Company's Hemopurifier has also been discovered to capture tumor-secreted exosomes underlying several forms of cancer. Tumor-derived exosomes have recently emerged to be a vital therapeutic target in cancer care. These microvesicular particles suppress the immune response in cancer patients through apoptosis of immune cells and their quantity in circulation correlates directly with disease progression. In addition to treating HCV-infec ted individuals, the Company has conducted a single proof of principal treatment study related to the treatment of HIV. In the study, Hemopurifier therapy reduced viral load by 93% in an HIV-AIDS infected individual without the administration of antiviral drug therapy. The study protocol provided for 12 Hemopurifier treatments, each four hours in duration, that were administered over the course of one month. Researchers at a university have since discovered that the Hemopurifier is able to capture exosomes that transport NEF protein, which is known to suppress the immune response in HIV-infected individuals.

The Company has been assigned all rights and title to and interests in an invention and related worldwide patent rights for a method to treat cancer under an assignment agreement with the London Health Science Center Researc! h, Inc. (! LHSCRI) The agreement provides that the Company is responsible for paying certain patent application and filing costs as well as a 2% royalty on any future net sales. The Company has als! o exercis! ed an option to license a pending patent entitled, Method to Inhibit Proliferation and Growth of Metastases from The Trustees of Boston University. The license provides a development strategy for new cancer therapies by uniting drug agents that inhibit the spread of cancer-related metastases with filtration techniques already in the Aethlon Hemopurifier(R). The resulting devices would inhibit tumor growth by reducing the presence of circulating growth factors without interfering with surgical wound healing or the recovery of tissue injured by radiation therapy.

The Company competes with Asahi Kasei Kurary Medical.

Advisors' Opinion:

Stocks as a whole haven't gotten the new year off on the best foot, but that's not to say every equity out there is in trouble. Indeed, some small cap stocks may actually be doing well - and poised to do well for a while - specifically because larger companies are seeing their stocks struggle. To that end, traders looking for a bullish bright spot to start the new year may want to take a closer look at Amedica Corporation (NASDAQ:AMDA), Threshold Pharmaceuticals, Inc. In February 2013, it acquired the operating business and certain patent properties of MIPS Technologies, Inc. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ashraf Eassa]

However, I expect that Intel is at risk of having a significant marketing problem trying to sell a dual core product into a world of quad core phones, even if the dual core part delivers better performance/watt. I further expect that from what is currently known about Bay Trail's GPU (4 EU Gen7 GPU), it is unlikely that -- unless Intel is either using Imagination's (IGNMF.PK) next generation PowerVR 6 or a beefed up Gen7 design for the "Merrifield" SoC -- it will be as competitive with the Snapdragon 800 on the GPU side of things, which could pose as an additional headwind to adoption. I also believe that the Q1 2014 launch curtails any hope that there will be a 14nm smartphone product launched in 2014 (although Mr. Krzanich's comments about "acceleration" could be a source of optimism here), which means that the company's process lead could ultimately prove to be ephemeral in this particular end market. Fortunately, p! roduct cycles in this space are sho rt, so it may be okay to have Merrifield be reasonably short lived.

Top 10 Long Term Companies To Buy For 2014

Last week I wrote about a few things investors should do if they knew a market correction was coming. The preparation for the impending correction was simple: Review your holdings to ensure your portfolio was still properly balanced so that no one stock commands the lion's share of your investable dollars, determine whether your investing thesis was still alive, and mentally prepare yourself for some possible short-term paper loses. Then sit back and let the market do what the market does, because even if the market declines in the short term, it tends to rise ever higher in the long term.

I got a number of reader comments on the article, but one stood out to me. Misterpotatohead wrote, "So how exactly does this strategy differ from any other period in the market cycle?"

Well, let's first look at the market and its cycles. My colleague Dan Caplinger recently published a great piece explaining that when we look at the history of the markets, we typically see three 5% corrections each calendar year, one 10% correction each year, and a 20% correction once every three and a half years.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Kanak Kanti De]

Amgen needed an Onyx-like acquisition badly. For one, sales of Aranesp and Epogen, its flagship drugs for anemia, are dropping on concerns of safety, and loss of monopoly in 2012 to Affymax (AFFY), which received FDA approval for a rival anemia drug. (Note though, that after Omontys was recalled this year, that problem is resolved for Amgen.) Secondly, four of its top selling products go off patent in 2015.

In addition, we recommend buying shares in Brazilian energy giant Petroleo Brasileiro Petrobras S.A. (PBR.A).

Despite a gradual rise in crude oil prices, problems with Brazil's economy, compounded by obstacles in Petrobras's scramble to finance significant on-shore and off-shore hydrocarbon discoveries, have ganged up to erode PBR.A's stock price this year.
