Advisors' Opinion:

Consider the rupture of an Enbridge (NYSE: ENB  ) pipeline, which discharged roughly a million gallons of bituminous crude into Michigan's Kalamazoo River in June 2010. Though three years have passed, the cleanup effort still isn't over. Enbridge employees and state and federal environmental crews continue to test the river, where sheen and clumps of oil still linger. The company reported a 4% year-over-year decrease in its first-quarter net income, partially because of the escalation of cleanup costs related to the spill, which are now approaching a whopping $1 billion.

    Bucks from the Brits
PPL (NYSE: PPL  ) managed to wow investors in 2011 when the company beat analyst estimates for four straight quarters. When it did it again in 2012, it was really only a matter of time until its shares hit a new 52-week high, now up 17.7% in the last year. With 85% of 2013 earnings per share (EPS) originating from regulated business, the utility has taken a tried-and-true page out of Ameren's book. My initial commentary was criticized by some as a "rant," a "rambling stream of consciousness," and several other descriptions, and that was exactly how I intended it to be…..on the surface. I attempted to satirize and emphasize the panic and fear that resulted in the 20-25% correction that ensued, and some thought me crazy to step into the smoky fray, doubling down on Potash Corp. (POT). I would have bought several other companies just as brazenly that day, and the following week, if I had the cash available. Doubling my position was my share though. A good start.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Working against the entire industry have been weaker commodity prices, which have sacked fertilizer prices across the board. Potash producers such as PotashCorp (NYSE: POT  ) and Agrium have seen prices per ton sink from more than $455 last year to just $390 as of the end of March. Things are even worse, though, for nitrogen-based fertilizer producers in terms of the price drop they've witnessed. Last spring, liquid UAN had been going for $450 a ton and was down to $350 a ton to start the year. The drop was even more noticeable for dry urea nitrogen, which tumbled from as high as $750 a ton to $440 a ton.

Morgan Stanley announced on Monday that it has resumed coverage on Potash Corp (POT).

Morgan Stanley analyst Vincent Andrews stated that the company has assigned the fertilizer stock an “Equal Weight” rating, warning “We remain cautious on the overall potash market, though more because of loose supply/demand fundamentals than because of dynamics in Russia/Belorussia. Potash prices have been moving lower for 8 quarters in a row now (7 of which BPC was fully functioning) and prices were continuing to drift lower in the weeks preceding the BPC break-up (recall Mosaic’s disclosure about lower prices in the Brazilian market on its July 16th earnings call.”

Potash shares popped 1.55% during Monday’s session. Year-to-date, the stock has fallen 21.35%.

Yesterday, small cap geothermal stock U.S. Geothermal Inc (NYSEMKT: HTM) produced a geyser of a return when it surged 26.79%, meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock verses the performance of other geothermal stocks like small cap Ormat Technologies, Inc (NYSE: ORA) and mid cap Calpine Corporation (NYSE: CPN).First of all, I should mention there are some other geothermal stocks out there like Alterra Power Corp (CVE: AXY) and Ram Power Corp (TSE: RPG) who have their primary listing on Canadian exchanges with secondary ones on the OTCmeaning they may not be a good deal for American investors or easy to invest in. Second, U.S. Geothermal Inc itself is a good geothermal proxy as itsfocused on developing, owning, and operating clean, sustainable electric power from geothermal energy resources and itsoperating geothermal power projects at Neal Hot Springs, Oregon; San Emidio, Nevada; and Raft River, Idaho plus El Ceibillo, an advanced stage, geothermal prospect located within a 24,710 acre energy rights concession area near Guatemala City, the largest city in Central America.

No Fat in This Drug Launch

Prescriptions of Amarin's (NASDAQ: AMRN  ) Vascepa are on a path to the moon. The company was nice enough to include a graph plotting prescriptions since the lipid-lowering drug launched at the end of January. (You can download a larger version here.)

Source: Amarin.

That trend line looks great. If Vascepa were an oncology drug that costs $10,000 per month, the drug would be approaching blockbuster status. But it isn't. Not even close. Amarin averaged about $223 for each prescription, recognizing a grand total of $2.34 million in revenue during the first quarter.

Let's extrapolate
Prescriptions grew 62% from March to April. If Amarin were able to keep that month-over-month growth pace, we'd see about 19,100 prescriptions in May and 31,000 in June for total of around 62,000 prescriptions in the second quarter. Based on the revenue per prescription in the first quarter, that would only bring in under $14 million.

Hot Consumer Companies For 2015

You've got to start somewhere, but that's still a low base to be working off of. If you extrapolate out for a couple of quarters, you can get decent sales down the road, but I don't know how long Amarin can keep up this hyper-growth rate. It's bound to slow as the company finishes picking all the low-hanging fruit.

By comparison, GlaxoSmithKline's (NYSE: GSK  ) fish oil Lovaza racked up $229 million in the U.S. in the first quarter. There's certainly potential for Amarin to get there, eventually, but it'll take a while. Quite a bit of Lovaza's sales come from off-label use in patients that only have moderately high triglyceride levels. Those patients could use Vascepa, but I suspect that doctors will want a little more experience using the drug before prescribing it off label.

By that point, hopefully Amarin will have its data for moderately high triglyceride levels on the label. The request to expand Vascepa's label has already been submitted to the Food and Drug Administration, which should make its decision on or before Dec. 20.

There are 10 times as many patients with moderately high triglyceride levels than there are with extremely high triglyceride levels covered by the current indication. That's a huge opportunity, but it also offers a challenge. Amarin will need help selling the drug from a large pharma partner to maximize the opportunity.

Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) -- which sells Zetia and its combination products, Vytorin and recently approved Liptruzet -- seems like the most obvious choice. AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN  ) might also be a good fit since it sells Crestor, a cholesterol-lowering statin that could be combined with Vascepa in a single pill.

But one has to assume that Amarin was in talks with Merck, AstraZeneca and/or other pharma companies after Vascepa's initial approval; management said as much. Not much has changed since then -- $2.34 million in sales and a few extra patents aside -- so Amarin might have to lower its expectations to get a deal done.

Can Amarin beat the odds?
Small biotech companies usually crash and burn when it comes to launching drugs -- but can Amarin prove the doubters wrong with Vascepa? In our new premium research report, The Motley Fool's top biotech analyst offers an in-depth look at this drugmaker's upcoming opportunities, along with reasons to buy and sell this stock today. Hot Income Stocks To Watch Right Now

Last week was another strong one for the real-money Inflation-Protected Income Growth portfolio. The portfolio's value improved by a touch over $665 last week, to end the week above $34,000. For a portfolio that started in December with $30,000, reaching a better than 13% return in five months would ordinarily be something to celebrate.

In reality, though, that performance had a lot of help. Over the life to date of the iPIG, the S&P 500 has actually risen a bit faster, up a bit more than 14%. The iPIG portfolio's stellar performance owes a lot to that general market tailwind. Still, a fundamental truth about the market is that to get any of the returns from investing, your money has to be at risk and invested. And from that perspective, the iPIG portfolio has been incredibly successful.

Built on a solid foundation
While many of the iPIG portfolio's gains were aided by the market's meteoric rise, each investment in the portfolio was a calculated choice based on principles first laid out nearly a century ago. Benjamin Graham, the father of value investing and the man who taught investing to Warren Buffett, laid out those key themes in a book called The Intelligent Investor.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By stanh30]

It does not matter if it a penny stock, all that matters is whether or not my reasoning is correct. However, in June the Global Depositary Shares (GDS) will undergo a 60:1 reverse split (pending shareholder approval) and the stock will no longer be a penny stock. Unfortunately the reverse split will occur after the June 12, 2014 record date for determining the persons and/or entities liable to the Depositary for the annual fee of $0.02 per Global Depositary shares for depositary services. This is an enormous fee for GDS shares, but one that I will pay due to the extreme undervaluation. Just remember that if you purchase the GDS shares on or before June 12th you are effectively paying an extra $0.02 per share.

Halliburton's share-price gains began early in the quarter after the company reported its first-quarter results. Although the company took a massive $637 million charge related to the 2010 Gulf disaster, Halliburton managed to hold its own on the domestic front in a weak environment. Internationally, the company cleaned up, with sales rising 21% and at more than twice that rate in the Eastern Hemisphere. But, perhaps most importantly, Halliburton looked favorably on the near-future for domestic drilling, noting gains in margins, and some pricing power expected to enhance profitability from rising well production. That's consistent with the results we saw from Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) this morning, as the industry leader beat earnings expectations with a nearly 50% jump in its net profits, coming largely from overseas activity, but also posting a 2% revenue increase in North America.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Most of the selling last quarter took place in the energy sector -- and within it, no single stock got sold off as hard by funds as Schlumberger (SLB). All told, funds unloaded more than 4.57 million shares of the oil field servicer, a stake that's worth close to $430 million at current price levels. So, should you sell too? Not so fast.

Schlumberger is the biggest oil service company on the planet. The firm's revenues come from a menu of specialized field services such as seismic surveys and well drilling and positioning. In a nutshell, SLB's job is to pull oil out of the ground as efficiently as possible -- and with oil prices in freefall, SLB's value proposition matters more now than it did when crude was trading in the triple-digits. Oil firms turn to Schlumberger because the tasks they need to accomplish are too nuanced or proprietary to pull off in-house. And that gives the firm a deep economic moat.

Another part of SLB's deep moat comes from boot! s on the ! ground. Because Schlumberger is on-site at its clients' well locations, the firm is able to sell more complementary services at one time. The energy sector has gotten shellacked in the last few months, and frankly, that downward pressure isn't showing any signs of letting up. That said, SLB's revenues don't ebb and flow exactly in step with crude prices (unlike its clients), and shares look oversold here.

We re-established an investment in CME Group, Inc. (CME) during the period. CME is the largest and most diversified derivatives marketplace in the U.S. Its exchanges support trading across a variety of asset classes, including interest rates, equity indexes, energy, agricultural commodities, foreign exchange and metals. We believe CME has the opportunity to significantly accelerate its growth rates due to the eventual normalization of interest rates and the attendant interest rate volatility. CME's interest rate trading volumes (ADV) have been depressed as a result of the Fed's zero interest rate policy and low interest rate volatility. For example, interest rate ADV was 4.8 million in 2012compared to 7.1 million in 2007, before the financial crisis. However, given the Fed's recent policy statements (discussed above), market participants are starting to anticipate an end to quantitative easing (QE). On May 30, CME experienced record volume for interest rate derivatives with ADV of 19.4 million. With the globalization of CME's business, a host of new products, and the regulatory requirement for interest rate swaps to be cleared on an exchange, we believe CME's interest rate volumes can surpass their prior peak, significantly driving earnings growth for the company.

And as cyber security becomes more and more into focus, this user-centric model is gaining traction and client wins. Cisco (CSCO) has even recognized this concept with its new Insieme 'application centric' switching platform. ARUN's ClearPass platform, which is part of its Mobile Virtual Enterprise (MOVE) architecture, is leading this revolution, which could be the next evolution in this industry. Wi-Fi is no longer about providing access points, although that is part of the equation. It is about providing a comprehensive solution set to the end user while protecting the network. ARUN is ahead of its competition in this niche. And it has intellectual property in this area that will be of significant value if this becomes the norm.

Finally, I always like to see one of the most important financial ratios applying to stockholders, the best measure of performance for a firm's management: the return on equity. The ratio has decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. Currently, a ROE of 45.9% is higher than all the 1,805 companies in the Diversified Industrials industry. Competitors such General Cable Corp. (BGC) has a very low ROE of 0.3% which is clearly not attractive. An alternative could be Belden Inc. (BDC) with a positive ROE of 24%.

Top Freight Stocks To Watch For 2014

For the second time this year The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) announced Friday that it will cut its production rate for the company venerable 747-8 jumbo jet. Production will be cut back to 1.5 planes a month from the previously announced cut in April to 1.75 planes a month. At the beginning of the year Boeing had planned production for the 747-8 at 2 planes a month.

Lower market demand for the planes both as passenger and freight carriers is once more the reason Boeing gives for the cutback. The number of orders for the 747-8 has fallen from 110 in April to 107 currently and Boeing has delivered a total of 56 of the planes to date. As of April announcement Boeing said it had delivered 46 747-8s.

A company executive said:

This production adjustment better aligns us with near-term demand while stabilizing our production flow, and better positions the program to offer the 747-8′s compelling economics and performance when the market recovers. Although we are making a small adjustment to our production rate, it doesn’t change our confidence in the 747-8 or our commitment to the program.

Contract warehousing refers to the optimization and operation of warehouses for customers using technology and warehouse-management systems to reduce inventory carrying costs and supply-chain cycle times. For several customers, contract-warehousing operations include light assembly or kitting operations.

Menlo Worldwide Logistics provides its services using a customer- or project-based approach when the supply-chain solution requires customer-specific transportation management, single-client warehouses, and/or single-customer technological solutions. However, Menlo Worldwide Logistics also utilizes a shared-resource, process-based approach that leverages a centralized transportation-management group, multi-client warehouses and technology to provide scalable solutions to multiple customers. Additionally, Menlo Worldwide Logistics segments its business based on customer type. At December 31, 2011, Menlo Worldwide Logistics operated 76 warehouses in North America, of which 55 were leased by Menlo Worldwide Logistics and 21 were leased or owned by clients of Menlo Worldwide Logistics. Wunderlich’s Nicholas Bender thinks FedEx’s results bode well for Old Dominion (ODFL), Con-way (CNW) and Saia (SAIA):

We expect all less-than-truckload carriers to benefit in 2Q14 from the same trends that carried FedEx Freight to a banner 4Q14. This includes Hold-rated Old Dominion, which will continue to grow at well above market rates, and Buy-rated Con-way, which we believe can leverage a strong 2Q14 to prime the pump on margin enhancement efforts. Our favorite name in the space remains Saia (SAIA-$42.92, Buy), which will once again see accelerating tonnage growth in 2Q14. Though tonnage growth will moderate in 2H14 due to steeper comps, there remains considerable potential for the company to boost yield and continue winning incremental business with new accounts.
