AutoZone Earnings Puzzle Investors as Shares Rise, Fall

AutoZone’s (AZO) earnings have investors puzzled as to whether they should buy or sell.

Reuters

The Wall Street Journal has the goods on AutoZone’s report:

For the quarter ended Aug. 31, AutoZone reported a profit of $371.2 million, or $10.42 a share, up from $323.7 million, or $8.46 a share, a year earlier. Excluding an additional week of sales in the latest period, earnings were $9.76 a share.

Net sales improved 12% to $3.1 billion. Sales at stores open at least one year rose 1%.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had most recently forecast per-share earnings of $10.34 on revenue of $3.09 billion.

Gross margin stayed at 51.8%.

The first reaction: Sell. In pre-open trading this morning, shares of Autozone had dropped 0.6% by 8:30 a.m. But they the stock soon rallied back into positive territory and was trading higher by 0.3% at 9:15. At the open, shares traded up as much as 1%, before falling into the red. Citigroup’s Kate McShane digs into the results, which were decidedly mixed:

Top 5 Consumer Companies To Invest In Right Now

…the beat was driven by revenue growth of +12.0% y/y (vs. our +7.1%) and lower tax rate of 35.5% (vs. our 36.8%), partially offset by flat y/y gross margins (vs. our +117bps) and operating margin expansion of +29bps y/y (vs. our +143bps). Excluding the 17th week, sales would have been +5.6% y/y and EPS of $9.76.

Autozone also said its same-store sales rose just 1%, lower than McShanes estimate of a 3% increase and the analyst consensus of 2.5%.

Autozone has gained 17% this year, but is off by 1.9% during the past month, both of which have lagged the S&P 500. Perhaps that explains the muted reaction to the report. With investors not expecting much, a mixed report is just–a mixed report.

Autozone has dropped 0.3% to $413.22  , while Pep Boys (PBY) has gained 0.2% to $12.19 , Advanced Auto Parts (AAP) has risen 0.3% to $80.35, and O’Reilly Automotive (ORLY) has advanced 0.3% to $124.42 .

Hot High Tech Companies To Own In Right Now

Look out Robert Half International Inc. (NYSE:RHI), and move over Kelly Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:KELYA). Staffing 360 Solutions Inc. (OTCBB:STAF) is close to bringing the fight for market visibility to your turf, by graduating from its OTC listing to a NASDAQ listing. Once the upgrade is complete, it's going to be one more reason (in case growth wasn't enough) investors would choose STAF over RHI or KELYA to fill a void in their portfolios.

In retrospect, nobody can be surprised; everybody had to see it coming. Staffing 360 Solutions went from a company doing less than a million dollars per year in revenue less than a year ago to a company that's boasting an annualized revenue run rate of more than $100 million. At its current pace, employing the same acquisition strategy, STAF expects to be producing annual revenue of $300 million. A higher-level listing was inevitable, and the company made it official today by announcing it has applied with the NASDAQ to see its stock listed on its exchange. It's a serious upgrade to the company's credibility, not to mention it would allow a whole new batch of buyers (who can't or won't buy OTC stocks) access to Staffing 360 Solutions. In that regard, the upgrade could be a big bullish catalyst for STAF.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

For tech-savvy investors who know which companies make them, when they hear the words "weapons detection" or "body scanners", they tend to think of companies like American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI) and OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS). And well they should. OSIS and ASEI are two of the biggest North American providers of the kind of equipment you might see being used by airport security personnel screening passengers before allowing them to their gate. There's just one challenge in the average school system tapping OSI Systems or American Science & Engineering to help defend their school grounds.... their hardware starts with a six-figure price tag, and rapidly works its way up to higher-capacity and more powerful versions. For a school with multiple doors, it's simply not feasible. View Systems Inc. is a viable alternative.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

It's tragic that it took a tragedy like last year's shooting at a Newton, Connecticut elementary school to get the ball rolling. Nevertheless, that ball is rolling now, and it's putting companies like L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:LLL), View Systems Inc. (OTCBB:VSYM), and American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI) in the spotlight. How so? Because VSYM, ASEI, and LLL make the tools that are, unfortunately, going to be the only way to absolutely ensure this nation's public schools are secure, and defended from gunmen like Newton's Adam Lanza.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

While it's tragic that it took a string of tragedies to make school safety and security a priority in the United States, it can't be denied that the topic has been put front and center - school systems everywhere are asking themselves tough questions, mainly focusing on what can be done quickly and cost-effectively to secure school buildings. Part of that discussion has put companies like OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS), American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI), and View Systems Inc. (OTCBB:VSYM) in the limelight. The three organizations all make security screening and weapons detection systems. If you've flown from anywhere inside the United States anytime since 2003, odds are pretty good you or your luggage passed through equipment made by ASEI or OSIS.

Nigeria's reformed banking system has provided many foreigners with an attractive means to invest in the fast-growing domestic economy. The banking industry is important, not only because of the rise of microfinance, but because of the move by banks into consumer banking. Until recently, banks were mainly financing large businesses or the government through bond purchases. Following a banking crisis in 2008, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) conducted an audit of the commercial banking sector. All banks that failed the audit had their CEOs replaced. The state-owned Asset Management Corporation (AMCON) was created to purchase non-performing loans and recapitalize the unhealthy banks. A recent review of the country's banks by the IMF showed a dramatic increase in profits for the industry in 2012, while the capital adequacy ratio was above the minimum requirement of 10% and non-performing loans were below the mandated threshold of 5%5.

The Deal: Dell's Deal Done at $25B After Months of Conflict

NEW YORK (The Deal) -- Shareholders on Thursday approved private equity firm Silver Lake and founder Michael Dell's LBO of his eponymous Texas PC maker. Dell (DELL) will soon go private, for about $25 billion, after about 25 years on the public markets.

"I am pleased with this outcome and am energized to continue building Dell into the industry's leading provider of scalable, end-to-end technology solutions," said Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell, in a statement. "As a private enterprise, with a strong private-equity partner, we'll serve our customers with a single-minded purpose and drive the innovations that will help them achieve their goals."

A statement from the company said the deal's total value, including the $13.75 share price and special dividend of 13 cents a share, is $24.9 billion.

Top Healthcare Technology Stocks For 2016

The deal's likely success solidified Monday, when activist investor Carl Icahn bowed out of the bidding for Dell, acknowledging it would be nearly "impossible" for him to win, he said earlier in the week. The company has been shopping a $5.5 billion loan for the transaction, which sources said is "covenant-lite" and anticipated to complete in October. Even in spite of the length of time it took to complete the transaction, it appears as if Dell and Silver Lake were capable of accessing capital at a low rate and on friendly terms, in advance of any decision by the Federal Reserve to taper its asset buying, which could impact the debt markets. The deal has been on hold for months as Icahn, joined by investment firm Southeastern Asset Managemennt Inc., and the founder-sponsor team sparred with one another, issuing rhetoric about whether or not the company could succeed as a public entity. Icahn, however, achieved one thing, the original $13.65 per share price was nudged up to its present value. And there is a possiblity the deal price could go higher slightly higher. Despite Icahn bowing out of a control deal for Dell, in which he sought to complete a leveraged recapitalization that would have left a portion of the company as a public entity, the investor continues to pursue a court-mandated appraisal of Dell's stock.

Dell has faced falling earnings as the PC market struggles against tablets' rising popularity and as manufacturers including Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL) are gaining a growing percentage of consumer market share. The company's struggles have been compounded by difficulties in services markets, where cloud-based offerings from other competitors, including Amazon, are taking hold with enterprise clients.

However, there are a couple of bright spots out there. First, sales of Westport's 12 liter ISX12 G, being co-built with Cummins  (NYSE: CMI  ) , are on track to meet targets for 2014 according to a number of industry experts. Sales of natural gas trucks in 2014 are expected to have grown 27% this year versus 2013. Also, part of the delay in bringing HPDI to market is Westport's shift to HPDI 2.0, and the adoption of HPDI 2.0 by development partners like AB Volvo  (NASDAQOTH: VOLVY  ) . The injector components are expected to be manufactured in Westport's venture with Delphi Automotive  (NYSE: DLPH  ) , and the costs will be less than earlier versions, helping natural gas engines be more cost-competitive with diesel.

West Marine (Nasdaq: WMAR) is an undervalued retailer.  The company is going through a change in focus from a bricks and mortar boat product retailer to a fully integrated retail and wholesale business through bricks and clicks, targeting the boating and water enthusiast customer.   Recent results have been affected by a severe rainy and cool spring which hurt boat usage and delayed the start of the season.  The company has accelerated cash investments to build larger more productive stores and expand its ecommerce abilities, consequently affecting free cash flow short term.  The stock lacks sponsorship as there is only one research report written on the company by a small boutique firm.  The stock trades at only book value despite the company being the leading industry player with a solid balance sheet and significant net cash position.

Small cap resource or green stocks Paradigm Resource Management Corp (OTCMKTS: PRDC), Extreme Biodiesel Inc (OTCMKTS: XTRM) and Pan Global Corp (OTCMKTS: PGLO) have all been getting some attention lately thanks in part to a few paid stock promotions. However, two of these small cap appear to be the subject of minimal paid promotion activity, but even a small paid promotion or investor relations campaign can increase a stock volatility. So do these three small cap resource or green stocks have what it takes to deliver some Christmas cheer for investors and traders alike? Here is a quick reality check:

Top New Stocks For 2015: Gevo Inc (GEVO)

Gevo, Inc., incorporated in June 2005, is a renewable chemicals and advanced biofuels company. The Company is focused on the development and commercialization of alternatives to petroleum-based products. The Company operates in two segments: Gevo, Inc. Segment and Gevo Development/Agri-Energy Segment. Gevo, Inc. Segment is responsible for all research and development activities related to the future production of isobutanol, maintaining and protecting its intellectual property portfolio, developing future markets for its isobutanol and providing corporate oversight services. Its Gevo Development/Agri-Energy Segment is responsible for the production of ethanol and related products. In September 2010, the Company acquired a 22 MGPY ethanol production facility in Luverne, Minnesota that the Company intends to retrofit to produce isobutanol.

The Company isobutanol can also be converted by its customers into a range of hydrocarbons, which form the basis for the production of many products, including plastics, fibers, rubber and other polymers and hydrocarbon fuels, including jet and diesel fuel. Its technology platform consists of biocatalysts and a isobutanol separation unit. Together these technologies form the Gevo Integrated Fermentation Technology (GIFT). GIFT is designed to allow relatively low capital expenditure retrofits of existing ethanol facilities, enabling isobutanol production from a range of renewable feedstocks. The Company biocatalysts are microorganisms that have been designed to metabolize sugars to produce isobutanol.

GIFT consists of two components, biocatalysts which convert sugars derived from multiple renewable feedstocks into isobutanol through fermentation, and a separation unit which is designed to continuously separate isobutanol from water during the fermentation process. The Company developed its technology platform to be compatible with the existing approximately 20 BGPY of global operating ethanol production capacity, as estimated by the R! enewable Fuels Association (RFA).

The Company competes with Butamax Advanced Biofuels LLC (Butamax), BP p.l.c. (BP), E. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

I imagine the company has made headway since its initial press release, especially with commissioning for its Moema, Brazil, biorefinery looming. When updates are given on commercial achievements in the months ahead, will you be able to digest the important information that affects your investments? Heading into the homestretch of the first wave of commercial buildout, it is crucially important to understand what Solazyme, Gevo (NASDAQ: GEVO  ) , andAmyris (NASDAQ: AMRS  ) spill in press releases -- and the greater detail given in SEC filings.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

KiOR (Nasdaq: KIOR) is one of three advanced biofuel companies that venture capitalist Vinod Khosla took public in 2011. The other two were Amyris (Nasdaq: AMRS) and Gevo (Nasdaq: GEVO). Each of these companies has seen its share price drop sharply since the IPO. While KiOR is one of the few companies to have produced advanced biofuel for sale, the volumes have consistently come in below company guidance, and I expect production costs to remain above the sales price for the foreseeable future.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

In 2011, Khosla took public Amyris (Nasdaq: AMRS), Gevo (Nasdaq: GEVO), and KiOR (Nasdaq: KIOR). Each of these stocks started out trading up from the IPO price, with Amyris gaining more than 90 percent at one point. But the challenges of producing fuels from biomass began to mount, and investors realized that this business is capital-intensive. Enthusiasm for these companies dissipated as they fell short of production expectations. Since their respective IPOs Amyris, Gevo, and KiOR are down 70 percent, 92 percent, and 88 percent.

Top New Stocks For 2015: KiOR Inc (KIOR)

KiOR, Inc. (KiOR), incorporated on July 23, 2007, is development- stage company. KiOR is a renewable fuels company engaged in producing cellulosic gasoline and diesel from abundant non-food biomass. Cellulosic fuel is derived from lignocellulose found in wood, grasses and the non-edible portions of plants. The Company generates hydrocarbons from renewable sources . Its end products are fungible hydrocarbon-based gasolines and diesels that can be used as components in formulating finished gasoline and diesel fuels, rather than alcohols or fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) such as ethanol or biodiesel. During the year ended December 31, 2011, the Company commenced construction of its initial-scale commercial production facility in Columbus, Mississippi, designed to process 500 bone dry ton per day (BDT) of feedstock per day, As of December 31, 2011, the Company had not generated any revenues.

The Company has developed a process that converts non-food lignocellulose into gasoline and diesel that can be transported using the existing fuels distribution system for use in vehicles on the road. Its biomass-to-cellulosic fuel technology platform combines catalyst systems with fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) processes that have been used in crude oil refineries to produce gasoline. The biomass fluid catalytic cracking (BFCC) process operates at moderate temperatures and pressures to convert biomass in a matter of seconds into the renewable crude oil that can be processed using standard refining equipment into its cellulosic gasoline and diesel. In its demonstration unit the Company varies its volume output of gasoline from 37% to 61%, diesel from 31% to 55% and fuel oil from 8% to 9% from its renewable crude oil. The Company focuses on its commercialization efforts with respect to its gasoline and diesel. As of December 31, 2011, the Company had 76 pending original patent application families containing over 2,300 pending claims.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another biodiesel player that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is KiOR (KIOR), which is a next-generation renewable fuels company, producing cellulosic gasoline and diesel from abundant non-food biomass. This stock has been trashed by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off by 62%.

If you look at the chart for KiOR, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways and consolidating for the last month, with shares moving between $2.06 on the downside and $3.10 on the upside. Shares of KIOR are now starting to spike higher right above its 50-day moving average of $2.20 a share, and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in KIOR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.54 to $2.62 a share, and then once it takes out more near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.87 to $3.10 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 882,812 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then KIOR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $4.05 to $5 a share.

Traders can look to buy KIOR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $2.20 a share, or around its recent low of $2.06 a share. One can also buy KIOR off strength once it takes out that breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

KiOR (NASDAQ: KIOR  ) Here's a company that often gets associated with industrial biotech companies, but there are very few comparisons. Rather than encouraging microbes to pump out useful chemicals and fuels in biochemical processes, KiOR uses standard thermocatalytic reactions to turn wood chips and waste into drop-in fuels. The company does not produce cellulosic ethanol or biodiesel. The company produces chemically identical cellulosic gasoline and diesel, although current operations churn out fuel blendstocks. KiOR's first facility has an annual capacity of between 11-13 million gallons of fuels, while a larger facility will be three times that size. A modular platform and catalytic improvements will help boost economics and scale for future production.

Lockheed Martin provides valuable and essential security and aerospace technology to several companies and the governments worldwide. The company will reportedly announce a deal with Holland that may be a positive catalyst for the stock. The stock has been soaring higher and is currently trading near all-time high prices. Over the last four quarters, investors in the company have been pleased as earnings have been rising while revenues have been declining. Relative to its strong peers and sector, Lockheed Martin has been an average year-to-date performer. Look for Lockheed Martin to OUTPERFORM.

Advisors' Opinion:

    Dumped
Japanese industrial manufacturer Komatsu (NASDAQOTH: KMTUY  ) recently picked up market share in China by outcompeting rival Caterpillar on price. But Fisher probably dumped Komatsu stock based partly on the company's shrinking profits resulting from falling demand in Asian nations such as China and Indonesia .

  • [By Dan Carroll]

That doesn't mean you should rush headfirst into any old Japanese stock on the hopes of a nationwide surge; as with all investing, picking the best stocks is the way to go. The country's top exporters have seen their stock rise and fall with the yen's volatility, but leading manufacturers such as Kubota (NASDAQOTH: KUBTY  ) and Komatsu (NASDAQOTH: KMTUY  ) are poised to ride a weaker yen higher to better compete against foreign rivals.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

An up-and-down yen spurs an up-and-down market
Abe brought about stimulus in response to one of Japan's worst economic problems of the last half-century: more than two decades of a stagnant economy and deflation. Weakening the yen against other leading currencies would be a boon for leading Japanese exporters looking for an edge against overseas competition. Manufacturers such as Komatsu (NASDAQOTH: KMTUY  ) have applauded the moves as they look to use a weak yen to grow profits. Komatsu alone projected 46% full-year profit growth this year thank! s to the ! weak yen.
